Alex Barlow is the managing partner of Scott+Scott’s complex tort group.
Mr. Barlow has devoted his practice to representing individual and institutional plaintiffs in complex litigation. Mr. Barlow considers himself fortunate to have tried and won cases on behalf of a diverse spectrum of plaintiffs—ranging from workingmen stricken with mesothelioma to Fortune 500 companies. His recent trial docket includes cases on behalf of mesothelioma victims, former college athletes suffering from neurodegenerative diseases as a result of their playing football, victims of defective medical devices and municipalities ravaged by the opioid epidemic. He also regularly prosecutes and tries general negligence cases on behalf of the catastrophically injured and wrongful death heirs.
During his career Mr. Barlow has won verdicts on behalf of his clients in the areas of toxic tort, catastrophic injury, and commercial litigation, among them:
- $10.4 million, Castillo v. Garlock Castillo, et al. v. Garlock Inc., No. 97-4051 (TX Cty. Ct., El Paso Cty., Nov. 1, 1999);
- $8.2 million, Raper v. Pittsburg Corning; and
- $4.8 million, Wigley v. Georgia Pacific.
Mr. Barlow serves on the Executive Committee, the Science & Experts Committee, the Trial Committee and the Settlement Committee of MDL 3081. His role involves developing experts, deposing key adverse witnesses and defense experts, and shaping the litigation strategy for the Plaintiffs’ steering Committee. He is also slated to be a lead lawyer in the bellwether trials.
In 2021, Mr. Barlow was selected as lead trial counsel on behalf of Massachusetts communities devastated by the opioid epidemic. He directed the legal strategy for 26 cities and towns in their public nuisance claims, managing cases in both Massachusetts Superior Court and the Federal Opiate MDL (MDL 2804) before Judge Polster until the claims were successfully resolved.
Mr. Barlow was the lead lawyer in achieving settlements totaling over $80 million in the transvaginal mesh litigation. He was also a member of the corporate discovery team spearheading the case against Ethicon in this litigation.
In past pharmaceutical litigation, Mr. Barlow represented and achieved a confidential settlement on behalf of over 700 male children who developed gynecomastia from taking Janssen Pharmaceuticals’ antipsychotic drug, Risperdal.
Mr. Barlow has represented the Attorneys General of eight states against GlaxoSmithKline over the mis-marketing of its blockbuster diabetes drug Avandia, achieving settlements that collectively exceeded $220 million. He also represented two Oklahoma quasi-governmental health and retirement entities in litigation against Merc over its drug, Vioxx. Mr. Barlow has also served as counsel for thousands of men and women who suffered cardiovascular injuries from ingesting Avandia.
In Mr. Barlow’s most interesting and challenging pro bono case, he facilitated the return parental visitation rights to the mother of two children after her ex-husband, residing with the children in Malaysia, cut off her access for five years in contravention of U.S. court orders.
Mr. Barlow has an AV—Preeminent peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Currently, he is a President’s Club member of the American Association for Justice, and a member of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. He is a past member of the Board of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association.
