Scott + Scott is investigating the card grading practices of the major company, PSA. Since at least April 2022, increased prices of PSA grading may have impacted collectors purchasing these cards on the world’s largest online marketplace, eBay.
What’s Happening:
- The parent company of PSA has acquired multiple other grading entities, including direct competitors
- Prices and transaction fees for PSA-graded cards are rising rapidly
- Limited price competition in grading has resulted from these acquisitions
- The markets for card grading and sales of graded cards are both consolidated
- Marketplace structure has contributed to higher buyer costs
- The relationship between PSA and eBay has further limited competitive pricing for graded cards
- eBay offers preferential access to PSA grading services
- eBay uses algorithms favoring PSA-graded merchandise
Through their own anticompetitive actions, PSA has sole control over the grading and storage markets, while eBay dominates the selling platform used by most collectors. As such, grading costs have skyrocketed, leaving collectors with limited alternatives.
The bottom line: This conduct raises concerns under federal antitrust laws.
If you purchased graded cards on eBay, you may have paid inflated prices or experienced reduced access to fairly priced inventory.
All affected collectors will be represented on a contingency fee basis, meaning you pay nothing unless there’s a recovery.
